How to Follow Jesus

Life with God

The New Testament tells a startling story. God doesn’t stay distant. God shows up. In Jesus, God takes on flesh and steps into the neighbourhood (John 1:1–14; Philippians 2:5–7). Jesus doesn’t just talk about truth; He actually lives it. He shows us a way of being human that is rooted in trust in God and expressed through self-giving love (Matthew 5–7).

At the cross, Jesus gives Himself fully for the healing of the world, the forgiveness of sins, and the restoration of what has been broken (Matthew 26:26–29; Mark 10:45; Luke 9:22; John 10:14–18). Death doesn’t get the final word. God raises Jesus from the grave and opens up a whole new kind of living. It’s a surprising and upside-down Kingdom that breaks into the world here and now (Luke 24:1–8; 1 Corinthians 15).

This good news isn’t just something to believe. It’s something to step into. By the power of the Holy Spirit living within us (Romans 8:11), Jesus invites us into a life of discipleship shaped by three simple and challenging movements: 1) be with God, 2) grow to become like Jesus, and 3) live a life of active love by the Holy Spirit.

Be with God

When Jesus calls people, He doesn’t begin with a list of expectations; He begins with an invitation. “Come, be with me” (Mark 3:13–14). Before anything else, discipleship is about proximity. It’s about sharing life with our rabbi.

We learn to be with Jesus through prayer, by taking in His teachings, and by cultivating a life of abiding presence; a life rooted in Him (John 15:1–8). This is about relationship rather than performance, and about presence rather than pressure.

If you want to explore what this kind of everyday intimacy with God can look like, we invite you to read this post. Together, let’s explore what it means to live in union with Christ, moment by moment, right where we already are.

Grow to become like Jesus

To follow Jesus is to slowly and faithfully begin to resemble Him (1 John 2:6). This is the long and patient journey scripture calls sanctification; a gradual reshaping of our lives into the Way of Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:17–18; 2 Peter 1:2–9).

Over time, something begins to grow in us. Love deepens. Joy becomes more resilient. Peace takes root. We become more truthful, more gentle, and more free (Galatians 5:22). This isn’t about trying harder. It is about being transformed as we stay close to Jesus.

Live a life of active love by the Holy Spirit

Jesus is still at work, and the story of God isn’t over. Even right now in this moment, God is making all things new (Revelation 21:5), and astonishingly, Jesus invites us to take part in that renewal.

As His followers, we become His body in the world; the hands and feet of His ongoing mission (1 Corinthians 12:12–14). We join Him in acts of mercy, justice, reconciliation, service, and love. We do this not in our own strength, but empowered by the Spirit who fills us and sends us.
